Will Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar Help You to Pass a Drug Test?
Last Updated on
Apple cider vinegar is a popular home remedy. One of the latest internet darlings is that drinking vinegar can help in passing a drug test.
Well, it’s true that ACV can help you to detox naturally as you’ll find out later in this article. However, contrary to what most stoners’ believe, this method isn’t effective when used as a same-day solution.
I’ll tell you how and why it might work, the risks involved, and what scientific research reports have to say about it.

What is Apple Cider Vinegar
True to its name, ACV is obtained by crushing and squeezing apples. The sugary liquid obtained is fermented into alcohol by adding bacteria and yeast into it.
Later, acetobacter bacteria convert the alcohol into vinegar.
Acetic acid is the main component in ACV and is responsible for the sour taste. This is a weak acid with a pH of 4.3.
This acidity is what makes it a popular folk remedy for several well-known household uses.
Albeit lacking in good evidence, white apple cider vinegar is also believed to help in the prevention of infections.
The non-scientific community also puts a lot of trust in vinegar’s pH level.
Consequently, this community has come up with several claims and methodologies behind the use of ACV in passing drug tests.
That’s what we’ll be looking at in the following sections.
Using Apple Cider Vinegar as a Same-Day Solution
Using ACV as a same-day solution is the most common claim and perhaps the easiest too.
Most people find this method handy especially when they are subjected to a random test within a short span.
The good thing about this method is that vinegar is readily available in most kitchens.
You could also grab it at the grocery store near you at a cheap price.
Secondly, any brand of vinegar will work although Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar is touted as the best.
According to this belief, you only need to mix a spoonful of vinegar in at least one glass of water.
You should then continue drinking up to one gallon of water throughout the hours leading to the drug screening test.
You are also recommended to pee as many times as possible before the test to get rid of the contaminated urine.
Sources that vouch for this method’s effectiveness claim that vinegar works by masking or clearing any traces of metabolites in your urine.
This boosts your chances of beating the test.
While there are lots of positive feedback from people who have used this method successfully, there isn’t a single scientific study that proves that vinegar will clean your system or mask the metabolites in your urine sample.
Actually, the copious amount of water that you need to take in this process simply makes it dilution method and vinegar plays no role in it.
That being said, there are several important considerations that you need to keep in mind when trying to dilute a urine sample including the density of the urine, and the pH and creatinine levels.
I have already written an in-depth guide on the dilution method and how to it the right way here.
Adding Apple Cider Vinegar to Urine Sample
The second method of using Apple Cider Vinegar to pass a drug test involves adding it directly into the urine sample.
In this method, stoners base their argument on vinegar’s ability to lower the pH of urine.
Vinegar has a pH level of 4.3. When it is added to urine, it lowers the pH of urine (6.5-7.25) thereby making it slightly acidic.
There are a lot of studies that prove vinegar’s ability to lower the pH of urine. A 1988 study on the Adulterants causing false negatives in illicit drug testing, for instance, shows that vinegar lowers the pH of urine and, therefore, has the potential to cause a false negative.
The major catch with this method is that the first thing that any lab technician will do during a urine analysis is to test for the pH level of the urine.
According to the study above, Liquid Drano, Bleach, and Vinegar not only lowered the pH level of urine but these adulterants also shifted it outside the physiological range.
Needless to mention, this increases the risk of being flagged for adulteration.
It also makes the idea of adding vinegar into the urine quite unreliable and risky as well.
If it is evident that you were trying to defraud the test, you could fail the test due to adulteration or be forced to collect another sample in an observed environment.
How Apple Cider Vinegar Can Help to Pass a Drug Test
The 2 methods above prove to be quite unreliable in passing a drug test.
However, there is enough scientific evidence that shows that vinegar can help you out if you are trying to detox naturally.
This method requires a good amount of time (weeks or even months).
While it might not be worth considering in the case of a random test, it might help if you are trying to rid THC metabolites completely from your body.
The ability of vinegar to help in natural detoxification has its roots in two facts
- THC metabolites are stored in fats
- Acetic acid (vinegar’s active ingredient) does help in reducing body fat.
How do these two facts come into play when detoxing?
A study recorded in the Journal of Bioscience, Biotechnology and Biochemistry tried to investigate the effect of vinegar in animals. This experiment involved treating one set of mice with acetic acid and another one with water only.
The experiment showed a significant increase in fat metabolism in mice that had been treated with acetic acid than in those that had access to water only.
The researchers concluded that vinegar can help in reducing body fat mass and body weight in obese subjects.
This study opened doors for another study in the same journal that sought to investigate the impact of vinegar in human beings.
This study involved 155 people with a BMI in the 25-30 range and who were considered obese.
These subjects were divided into 3 groups. The 1st and 2nd groups were given 15ml and 30ml of vinegar respectively while the 3rd was given a placebo (a treatment with no active ingredient).
At the end of the study, the 2 groups that had been given vinegar recorded lower body weight, less abdominal fat, and a smaller waist than the group that did not take vinegar.
Importantly, the group that was given 30ml of vinegar showed a decrease in body weight and BMI values at week 8 while the low-dose group showed took 4 more weeks to record a significant decrease in these values.
Basically, this study shows that consuming at least 15ml of vinegar over a few weeks can help in reducing body weight and fat mass.
In our context, this increase in fat metabolism may make the body to release the THC metabolites that are ‘stored’ in the fat cells into the bloodstream for removal through urine.
It’s undeniable that drinking Apple Cider Vinegar can help you to detox naturally by boosting fat metabolism.
However, as the study above shows, it takes quite some time (up to 12 weeks) for a significant reduction to be noted.
Therefore, if you want to go this way, you might want to add a healthy diet and a good and consistent exercise plan into the regimen.
